My Photo Gallery

A lot of libraries have art galleries, so it seemed reasonable for a virtual library to have a virtual art gallery. Or photo gallery, in this case, since I'm not an artist but I am a photographer. And my camera bag is frequently with me on vacation. I've scanned many photos from trips I've taken, and put them in this part of the site.

DinoFest 1998
Chinese Allosaurs at DinoFest

In April 1998, I took a trip to Philadelphia for DinoFest 98, a gigantic gathering of dinosaur people. There was a large hall full of dinosaur and mammal fossil displays, and I was able to get some decent pictures of them.

To the Highlands
Sunrise over Portree Harbor

In late September 1998, I was able to fulfill a long-held dream and visit the Scottish Highlands. Naturally my camera went along, and equally naturally I came back with swarms of pictures, which I used to assemble a photo-essay on the whole trip.

The Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon Afternoon Vista

My big trip for 1999 was a visit to the Grand Canyon and other geological attractions in Arizona. Again, of course my camera went along and got extensive use, and I came back with about eight rolls of pictures.

Volcanoes of the Cascades
Lassen Peak seen from the south

In 2002, I went to WorldCon, the World Science Fiction Convention, in San Jose, California. I combined it with a five-day driving tour of the southern and central Cascades Range, from northern California up through Washington state.

Gettysburg Battlefield

Pennsylvania_Monument (106K)

In 2001, I paid a visit to Gettysburg Battlefield National Park. After reading many descriptions of this seminal battle, I wanted to see the actual land over which the battle had been fought. As usual my camera went along and got a good workout.

Whales and Seabirds Cruise

Common Dolphin caught in mid-jump

In summer 2006, I was a participant on a marine research cruise into the Northwest Atlantic, off the coast of the northeastern United States from Massachusetts down to Delaware.

Digital photography tends to be cheaper than film photography, so since I acquired a digital camera I've been taking a lot more pictures. A few of them have been good enough to show to others. I've grouped them into several galleries:

Things with Wings
Under Construction

Pomarine Jaeger swimming

Various pictures of animals with wings: mostly birds of land and sea, but a few pictures of butterflies too.

Tales of Whales
Under Construction

Humpback Whale blowing

Pictures of whales and dolphins, as seen on various whale watches and other cruises.
