The written word is a powerful tool, especially when combined with carefully selected photographs and other visual aids. As an experienced writer with equal photographic skills, I can create articles and essays that readers remember for a long time.
My work to date includes some published articles, a great many posts to science message-boards and websites, and a few long articles posted on my personal website. I'm also an experienced researcher with both electronic and print media. If you need an article that involves science, nature, or wildlife, then drop me a line. I'll be glad to give it a try.
Some samples of my writing skills:
- Nature Article: My Day Among the Terns
In July 2005 I spent a day on White and Seavey Islands, Isles of Shoals, observing the colony of terns there. The Seavey Island Tern Restoration Project is a joint project of New Hampshire Audubon and the New Hampshire state Fish & Game Department. I took a number of photographs and a lot of notes, which I later used to write an article about the Tern Restoration Project. As of fall 2007, I've had one article about the tern colony printed in the magazine Natural New England, and a second article is in press at the birdwatching magazine Birders' World. I've made readable scans of the Natural New England article: Page 1; Page 2. (note: scans of printed pages used as tearsheets under Fair Use; not for reproduction in any form).
- Software Review: "Birding Checklist"
"Birding Checklist" is a program that allows you to keep birdwatching lists on any PDA that runs the Palm operating system. After buying it and trying it, I wrote a review and submitted it to the birding magazine Bird Watcher's Digest, which accepted it and published it in a special "Technology Review" issue in November 2004.
- Newsletter Article: An Evolutionary Defense of Hunting
In late 1997 I wrote an article for the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) newsletter to defend hunting by invoking evolutionary theory and the fossil record. The basic theme of the article was that of all the available choices, only hunting is a naturally and evolutionarily sound method of controlling population of animals such as whitetail deer. Writing this article required some new research on top of my already-substantial knowledge of evolutionary theory and the fossil record. The three-part article is available at NAIA's website. - Online Article: Taxonomy Essay
After an interesting discussion about taxonomy on the Dinosaurs Forum on Compuserve, I did a bit of research and then wrote a basic article on taxonomy and classification. I uploaded this article to the Dinosaurs Forum library. A few months later, it was printed by Paul Tierney in The Fossil Collector, his newsletter for amateur paleontologists in Australia. An HTML version is available.
