Here are a few samples of my photography. Click any section title or the accompanying photo to see a full set of sample photos for that section.

Action Subjects

This gallery contains photos of people and animals in action: horses with their riders, dogs, and so on. As with wild animals, this sort of photography is very challenging. This gallery contains sample photos of all kinds of action subjects: pleasure-riders, barrel-racers, and agility dogs, and competitive sheepdogs. Most of these are digital photos. Some were taken outdoors, some indoors.

Animals

Monarch Butterfly on Flower

Photographing animals is always a challenge, because animals can move. Some animals are more of a challenge than others -- for example, photographing large animals is much easier than photographing dragonflies. This gallery contains sample photos of all kinds of animals: birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, insects, marine invertebrates. Most of these are digital photos. Some were taken outdoors, some indoors; some were taken from the decks of boats.

Landscapes and Scenics

Grand Canyon Afternoon Vista

Depending on the scene you want photographed, landscapes can be easy or difficult. With some landscapes, like the Grand Canyon, it's almost impossible to take a bad picture of them. With others, you need to work a bit on the composition, exposure, and timing in order to make it come to life. In this gallery are photographs of landscapes and other scenic views, from the Grand Canyon to the New Hampshire seacoast. Most of them were taken using slide film in an SLR camera.

Plants

Greater Blue Flag flower

Flowers and other plants are usually easy subjects, because they don't move -- or if they do, it's only wind motion, which can be adjusted for. Many flowers also present a beautifully complex subject to attract the eye. In this gallery are photographs of flowers, trees, and other kinds of plants. Some of these are film slides; the rest are digital photos. Most were taken outdoors.

Outdoor Subjects

Eilean Donan Castle

Buildings and monuments can be easy or difficult subjects, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it can be difficult to get the lighting right; other times you need to pay particular attention to the angle, to keep the subject looking interesting and avoid distractions. This gallery contains photographs of buildings, monuments, and other outdoor subjects. Some are scanned film photos; the rest are digital.

Indoor Subjects

Dinosaur Skeletons

Indoor subjects, such as museum exhibits, tend to be difficult for a very simple reason: the ambient lighting is dim, and flash often gives an unrealistic appearance., This small gallery contains photographs of indoor subjects, mostly taken with ambient light. Some of these are film pictures; the rest are digital photos.
