Herring Gull K30 in early 4th cycle
Gull: K30 Date photographed: 10/09/2013 Age: 3 years 4 months

Herring Gulls acquire adult plumage in their fourth year. A mere two months after the last photo, four months into its fourth year, K30 has replaced all the remaining brown feathers on its back with adult gray, while the brown primary flight feathers have been replaced with black ones. It has also traded its white head and neck for the brown-and-white of the winter adult. Traces of brown remain visible on the tail, but otherwise this bird is showing adult winter colors.
